Experience one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife encounters on this five-day journey from Kigali, Rwanda, into Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Trek through ancient montane rainforest to spend a precious hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family, guided by experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.
Along the way, connect with the communities that live around Bwindi, including the Batwa people, and discover local crafts, traditions, and conservation stories. Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its exceptional biodiversity and is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.
5 breakfasts, 3 lunchs and 3 dinners
On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by your guide or a representative from your accommodation and transferred to Boutique Heaven Lodge. The lodge is located about 15 minutes from the airport and close to the city centre, making it a relaxed place to settle in after your journey.
Each comfortable room opens onto a private terrace overlooking the lodge garden. Depending on your arrival time, you can unwind, enjoy a meal, and prepare for the adventure ahead.
After breakfast, travel from Kigali into south-western Uganda and continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This ancient forest is one of Africa’s most biologically rich landscapes, with more than 160 tree species, over 100 fern species, and a remarkable variety of birds and butterflies.
Bwindi is best known for its endangered mountain gorillas, with almost half of the global population living within the park. In the afternoon, take a gentle walk through Buhoma village, browse local handicraft markets, or visit the Batwa community to learn about their forest heritage and culture.
Begin early with a hearty breakfast before heading to the Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger station for registration and a pre-trek briefing. Your trained ranger guide will lead you into Bwindi’s dense rainforest in search of a habituated gorilla family.
Trekking can take between two and seven hours, depending on the location of the gorillas and trail conditions, so a moderate level of fitness is helpful. Once you find them, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing their natural behaviour—perhaps watching a dominant silverback, mothers caring for infants, or young gorillas playing in the undergrowth.
In the afternoon, return to your lodge and enjoy an optional cultural experience, including a traditional Batwa dance performance that shares the community’s deep connection to the forest.
After breakfast, bid farewell to Bwindi and travel back to Kigali. The scenic drive offers a final opportunity to enjoy the rolling hills, rural villages, and landscapes of Uganda and Rwanda.
On arrival, check in at Boutique Heaven Lodge and relax before your departure the following day.
After breakfast, enjoy a complimentary guided city tour of Kigali. Visit highlights such as the craft market, the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, and the Kigali Museum, gaining insight into Rwanda’s history, culture, and resilience.
Later, your guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight. Please allow sufficient time for check-in and airport procedures.
Gorilla tracking permits are required and should be booked well in advance, as availability is limited and permits are date- and sector-specific. Wear sturdy walking shoes, carry rain protection, and bring plenty of water for the forest trek.
