Discover Rwanda’s remarkable wildlife, landscapes, and living culture on this carefully paced 3-day gorilla trekking safari. Begin in Kigali, travel through the scenic “Land of a Thousand Hills,” and spend a memorable morning tracking endangered mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park.
Set beneath the volcanic Virunga Mountains, this short Rwanda safari combines close wildlife encounters with meaningful community experiences around Musanze. You will meet local artisans and brewers, learn about traditional banana beer making, and gain insight into Rwanda’s history and resilience in Kigali. Gorilla trekking begins at Kinigi Park Headquarters, where visitors receive a briefing before setting out with experienced park guides.
3 breakfasts, 2 lunchs and 2 dinners
On arrival at Kigali International Airport, your driver-guide will welcome you and begin with a relaxed introductory tour of Rwanda’s capital. Depending on your arrival time, visits may include a local craft market, the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi, and a city museum. The memorial is located in Gisozi, about ten minutes from central Kigali, and offers a thoughtful place to learn about Rwanda’s history.
Later, travel for approximately two hours to Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri), a vibrant town set against the dramatic backdrop of the Virunga volcanoes. Enjoy lunch at the Red Rocks Intercultural Exchange Centre, where you can join local brewers to learn how traditional banana beer is made. If you wish, help squeeze fresh banana juice and sample a glass of the local brew. You may also see basket weaving and learn how community tourism supports local families.
If time allows, optional activities include visiting Musanze Caves, taking a village walk, or learning more about the area’s conservation history, including the legacy of primatologist Dian Fossey.
After an early breakfast, transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters for registration and a pre-trek briefing. Gorilla trekking groups are small and accompanied by trained guides and rangers, helping protect both visitors and the gorillas.
Set out into the forested slopes of Volcanoes National Park in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family. Trek durations vary with the gorillas’ location, and the route can be physically demanding at altitude, sometimes taking several hours. Once your guide locates the family, you will have one hour to quietly observe them feeding, resting, playing, and caring for their young.
This is a rare and intimate wildlife experience, but it also depends on responsible visitor conduct. Wear sturdy hiking boots and long trousers, carry drinking water and snacks, and bring gloves for protection against stinging nettles. A reasonable level of fitness and good health are recommended for an enjoyable trek.
After the trek, return to your hotel for lunch and time to relax. In the afternoon, you may choose an optional cultural activity in Musanze.
After breakfast, return to Kigali for a final city tour. Visit the craft market for handmade souvenirs, explore the city’s museums, and visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial if you did not do so on Day 1. The memorial is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with occasional schedule exceptions.
Enjoy some last-minute shopping in one of Africa’s friendliest capital cities before your driver-guide transfers you to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight.
