Trek through Bwindi’s ancient rainforest to spend a precious hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family, then explore the open savannahs, crater lakes, and waterways of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Along the way, look for lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, and an exceptional variety of birdlife.
This itinerary is designed for international travelers seeking authentic wildlife encounters, spectacular landscapes, and a meaningful introduction to Uganda’s extraordinary biodiversity. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is led by Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides and offers one hour with a habituated gorilla family once they are located.
5 lunchs, 4 dinners and 4 breakfasts
On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, your Uganda Safari Archive guide will welcome you and brief you on the journey ahead. Travel southwest through Uganda’s rolling hills, banana plantations, and rural villages toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of Africa’s most important mountain gorilla habitats.
Enjoy scenic stops along the way, arrive at your lodge in the evening, relax, and prepare for the following day’s gorilla trek. Bwindi has four main trekking sectors, Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo, and your accommodation will be arranged according to your gorilla permit allocation.
After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for registration and a pre-trek briefing with Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. Your guide will explain trekking procedures, safety guidelines, and how to behave respectfully around the gorillas.
Accompanied by experienced ranger guides, follow forest trails in search of your assigned habituated gorilla family. Trek duration varies with the gorillas’ location and may take several hours, so a moderate level of fitness is recommended.
When you find the family, spend a permitted hour observing them as they feed, rest, play, and care for their young. This intimate wildlife encounter is often the highlight of a Uganda safari. Return to your lodge afterward for time to relax and reflect on the day.
Enjoy breakfast before departing Bwindi for Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda’s most popular and biodiverse protected areas. The drive offers beautiful views of the Rift Valley, local communities, and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains.
After lunch, set out on an afternoon game drive across the park’s savannah plains. Watch for elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, waterbucks, warthogs, and, with some luck, lions or a leopard resting in the shade. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Begin the day with a boat safari along the Kazinga Channel, the natural waterway linking Lake Edward and Lake George. The channel attracts large numbers of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffalo, and waterbirds, making it one of Uganda’s best wildlife-viewing experiences.
Cruise close to the shoreline and enjoy excellent photographic opportunities as animals come to drink and birds gather along the banks. In the afternoon, take another game drive through different areas of Queen Elizabeth National Park, increasing your chances of spotting predators and other wildlife.
Enjoy a final morning game drive as the park wakes up. This is a good time to look for animals you may not yet have seen and to take in the peaceful beauty of Queen Elizabeth’s landscapes one last time.
After breakfast, begin your return journey to Entebbe International Airport. Your guide will transfer you in time for your departure flight, bringing your 5-day Uganda wildlife and gorilla safari to a close.
