Experience two remarkable ways to encounter Uganda’s endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: a classic gorilla trek and an extended Gorilla Habituation Experience.
On your gorilla trek, you will spend up to one hour with a fully habituated gorilla family, observing their natural behaviour in the forest. The habituation experience, available in Bwindi’s Rushaga Sector, allows a small group of visitors to spend up to four hours alongside a semi-habituated gorilla family as researchers and rangers help them gradually become accustomed to human presence.
The Gorilla Habituation Experience is especially rewarding for photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, and travellers who want a deeper, more immersive encounter. Places are limited, so permits should be reserved well in advance.
4 lunchs, 3 dinners and 3 breakfasts
Your Uganda Safari Archive guide will collect you from your accommodation in Kampala or Entebbe at approximately 7:00 am. After a short safari briefing, begin the scenic journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda.
The drive covers roughly 540 km and takes about 9 hours, including rest stops. You will pause at the Equator for photographs and the popular water-draining experiment, then enjoy lunch in Mbarara. Along the way, keep an eye out for zebras and impalas as you pass Lake Mburo National Park.
Arrive at your lodge in the Bwindi area in the evening, check in, enjoy dinner, and rest ahead of your gorilla adventure.
After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a pre-trek briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides. You will learn about gorilla behaviour, trekking safety, and the rules designed to protect both visitors and gorillas, including maintaining a distance of at least 7 metres.
Accompanied by armed rangers and trackers, follow forest trails in search of your assigned mountain gorilla family. Trekking can take anywhere from 3 to 8 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location and movement. Once found, you will have up to one hour to quietly observe them feeding, resting, playing, and caring for their young.nfa.org+1
This is one of Africa’s most moving wildlife experiences. After returning to the lodge, you may relax or take an optional community walk to learn about local culture and conservation efforts.
Enjoy breakfast before transferring to the Rushaga Sector of Bwindi for your Gorilla Habituation Experience. After a detailed briefing, join researchers, rangers, and trackers as they follow a semi-habituated gorilla family through the forest.
Unlike standard trekking, this experience allows up to four hours in the presence of the gorillas. You will gain deeper insight into their social behaviour, feeding patterns, communication, and the careful conservation work involved in habituation. The experience takes place exclusively in Rushaga and is limited to small visitor groups.
After the experience, travel to the beautiful Lake Bunyonyi, known for its calm waters, terraced hillsides, and scattered islands. Check in, enjoy dinner, and relax by the lake.
After breakfast, take a peaceful boat ride on Lake Bunyonyi. Glide between the lake’s islands while enjoying views of terraced hills, birdlife, and traditional lakeside communities.
Later, begin your return journey to Kampala, with lunch en route. You will arrive in the late evening, where your guide will drop you at your accommodation or Entebbe International Airport, depending on your travel arrangements.
A porter is highly recommended. Porters assist with daypacks and provide valuable support on Bwindi’s steep, uneven trails, while also supporting the local community.
Uganda Safari Archive arranges responsible, well-planned gorilla safaris with experienced local guides. Because gorilla permits are limited and often sell out early, we recommend booking this safari several months in advance.
